Abstract The paper presents a rigorous formulation of adjoint systems to be solved for robust design optimization using the first-order second-moment method. This allows apply method any objective function, which is demonstrated by considering deformation at certain point and maximum stress as objectives subjected random material stiffness geometry, respectively. presented approach requires solution most three additional per uncertain system response, when compared deterministic case. Hence, number independent variables. comes expense accuracy, since functions are assumed linear with respect parameters. However, application two standard cases validation Monte Carlo simulations show that still able find designs.
